How to Set Up Commission Rules in SetSale

Commission rules let you control how sales commissions are calculated across your team. You can set a single default rate, or create targeted rules that adjust commissions based on the quote tier, salesperson, system type, equipment model, custom tier name, or job cost.

This article covers how to access commission settings, create rules with the available filter conditions, and apply your commission strategy.

Where to Find Commission Settings

  1. Go to SettingsPricing.

  2. Scroll down to the Commission section.

You'll see two areas here: a default commission rate and any custom rules you've created.

Setting a Default Commission Rate

The default rule applies to any quote that doesn't match a more specific rule. Set this to the commission percentage you want as your baseline — for example, 8%.

If you don't need any special logic, the default rate is all you need. Every quote will use this percentage.

Creating Commission Rules

If you want different commission rates for different situations, you can add rules above the default. Rules are evaluated in order from top to bottom — the first rule that matches a quote is the one that applies.

To add a rule:

  1. Click Add in the Commission section.

  2. Choose a condition type from the dropdown.

  3. Set the comparison and value.

  4. Enter the commission percentage for that rule.

Available Condition Types

You can filter commission rules using any of the following conditions:

  • System Type — Match based on the system type on a replace option (e.g., Heat Pump, AC & Furnace, Dual Fuel). This checks the matchup type on each replace option. Repair quotes don't have matchups, so this condition won't apply to them.

  • Model Number — Match based on equipment model numbers on a replace option (matchups and additional equipment). "Starts with" does a prefix match, so entering "GSX16" would match any model that begins with those characters. "Is" does an exact match, ignoring letter case.

  • Custom Tier Name — Match based on the custom display name assigned to a replace option's tier. This is useful if you've renamed your tiers to something like "Premium," "Standard," or "Economy" and want commission rates tied to those names. "Starts with" is a prefix match; "is" is an exact match ignoring letter case.

  • Cost Threshold — Apply a rule only when a job's price is above or below a specific dollar amount. Use "greater than" or "less than" to set the threshold.

  • Salesperson — Set a commission rate for a specific team member. This is useful when individual salespeople have negotiated different commission structures.

Comparison Options

Depending on the condition type, you'll see different comparison options:

  • Is / Is not — Exact match (ignores letter case)

  • Starts with — Prefix match (e.g., "GSX" matches "GSX160361")

  • Greater than / Less than — For cost-based conditions

Combining Multiple Conditions

You can add more than one condition to a single rule by clicking Add condition. When a rule has multiple conditions, all of them must be true for the rule to apply.

For example, you could create a rule that applies a 10% commission when the system type is "Heat Pump" and the job cost is greater than $10,000.

How Rules Are Applied

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Rules are checked in the order they appear. The first matching rule wins — once a quote matches a rule, the remaining rules are skipped.

  • The Default rule at the bottom catches anything that doesn't match a rule above it.

  • You can reorder rules by dragging them into the position you want.

Tips

  • Start simple. If your commission structure is the same across the board, just set the default rate and skip custom rules entirely.

  • Use "starts with" for model families. If you want to pay a higher commission on a specific product line, enter the model prefix rather than listing every individual model number.

  • Test with a new quote. Commission rules apply at quote creation time. After updating your rules, create a test quote to confirm the correct rate is being applied.

  • Repair quotes and system type rules. System type conditions only apply to replace options — repair quotes don't have matchups, so they'll fall through to the next matching rule or the default.
